Millions of people around the world are experiencing signs and symptoms of the silent condition and most of them don’t even know it (yet)! Depending on how you yourself are reading this post, you could either be contributing to forward head posture (FHP) or not.
Before we begin to discuss this all too common problem that more and more humans are beginning to develop, we first need to understand some basic anatomy and functions of the human spine, musculoskeletal, and nervous system.
Let us keep it simple. Anatomically speaking, there’s no real separation between your brain, brain stem, spinal cord, or nerve roots. They are all connected, they are simply located at different parts of the body and have slightly varying functions.
Encasing your brain providing critical support is your skull, and similarly, wrapped around the bottom of the brain stem and spinal cord, seven individual vertebrae that make up your neck (cervical spine). attached on top of all these bones are various soft tissue structures such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia.
On a simple functional level, your nervous system has two jobs. Listen and respond.
Listening, is all of the sensory (afferent)
